Devotion for February 2012

Treasured in the Heart
Somewhere in High School I read Ray Bradbury’s book, Fahrenheit 451, which depicts a society in which book-burning is an outcome of the society’s anti-intellectual ideology. Firemen existed not to put out fires, but to torch books. No one was permitted to own, let alone read a book. Despite the laws and punishments, there existed in this society a small band of faithful bibliophiles gathered outside the city where they met clandestinely to memorize classic literature.
The dedication to and love for literature, that I saw in these people who memorized entire books in order to keep them from being lost, deeply impacted me. Several years later, as a Christian, I recalled their commitment. If literature was considered so important as to be committed to memory lest it be forgotten, how much more important is it to memorize God’s Word.
Just how important is His Word? The Scriptures tell us of Christ our Savior!
Jn5:39- You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me. To know the Word is to see Christ.
While we may not (yet) live in a world where owning a Bible is against the law, having the Scriptures tucked away in our minds and hearts is an immeasurable blessing. As we have His Truth within us it will indeed be with us to teach us as we sit, walk, lie down and rise up (Deut 11:18-19).
Prayer: Lord of Light and God of Grace, may we ever be blessed to have Your Word with us. Help us to see Christ our Savior as memorize it and meditate upon it. May we regard Your Word as sweeter than honey and more valuable than much gold.
Ps. 119:11 I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.
